When people get sick with HIV they are often too weak and ill to farm or work. Food is nearly always a problem. Mama Sasa has a vegetable garden on her land to feed this big family, which includes her own children and grandchildren, as well as children from the village who have lost their parents to AIDS. A poor woman with three children came to Sasa for help many years ago. Soon after arriving the woman died, leaving the three orphans. This is how so many others heard about Mama Sasa, came to visit and left their children with her as they were too ill with HIV to farm and provide food for their children.
