Highlights from the 2004-2005 Performance assessment report
Responding to outbreaks and emergencies
The Health assembly adopted the International Health Regulations (2005), which provide a framework for global alert and response to public health emergencies of international concern.
WHO Strategic Health Operations Centre became fully operational, improving efficiency in coordinating response worldwide to outbreaks and emergencies. In 2004-2005 these included the tsunamis of 26 December 2004, support to the Government of Pakistan in the aftermath of the devastating south Asia earthquake, and response to avian influenza outbreaks.
Other achievements include the health survey carried out by WHO in Sudan August 2004, which was instrumental in bringing the Darfur crisis into the international spotlight.
