Tackling determinants of health
History was made on 27 February 2005 when the WHO Framework Convention on tobacco Control entered into force. In November 2005 the Framework Convention received its hundredth ratification, a milestone for the international health community.
A WHO Multi-country Study on Women's Health and Domestic Violence against Women completed in 2005 shows that violence against women is widespread, with far-reaching health consequences. The study draws on data from more than 24.000 women interviewed in 10 countries.
The WHO International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) was created to minimize the consequences of food-borne disease outbreaks; it includes an emergency component and already has 145 participating Member States.
At the Fifty-seventh World Health Assembly, the Director-General announced the formation of a Commission on Social Determinants of Health, a body aimed at addressing the social factors that have an impact on health.
