Access to Medicines Policy Research

In May 2010, the Alliance launched a new programme on Access to Medicines Policy Research. The objective of this initiative is to improve access to medicines in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) through the generation and use of evidence in the formulation of sound pharmaceutical policies.

The programme aims at improving the policy research capacity around Access to Medicines in LMICs and increasing policy-makers' awareness and demand for evidence relevant to their work. The approach to this policy research work will link the area of essential medicines and pharmaceuticals to the other buidling blocks of the health system and will be build on the Alliance's expertise in the area of health systems research.

The first year focused on setting a priority policy research agenda in the field of access to medicines, through a consultative approach based in countries and regions. In 2011, the findings of the country-level exercises were combined in order to establish priority research questions for future Alliance calls for proposals.

The majority of grant-funding for ATM work was for priority-setting exercises, but several studies have been commissioned where it was felt that a small investment by the Alliance could help to address important knowledge gaps.
