Global monitoring of country progress on addressing antimicrobial resistance
The global action plan on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) was adopted in 2015 by all countries through decisions in the World Health Assembly (WHA), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Governing Conference and the World Assembly of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Delegates. At the WHA in 2015, countries agreed to report back to the WHA in May 2017. FAO and OIE are also seeking information on progress with implementing the global action plan.
WHO, FAO and OIE have developed a monitoring questionnaire to review and summarise country progress, which will provide information for reporting at global level. The country responses will also be used to guide follow-up actions and identify areas where assistance and support is required.
The questionnaire asks countries to assess their progress with multi-sectoral working on AMR, developing a national AMR action plan and implementing key actions to address AMR. The questionnaire includes questions on progress in human health, animal health, crop production, food safety and the environment.
The questionnaire is designed to be completed through self-assessment at country level. There is a short guidance note which provides further information on the monitoring approach. Countries are encouraged to involve a multi-sectoral group in assessing national progress.
The questionnaire has been sent out to countries by the WHO AMR Secretariat through WHO regional and country offices, and is also being circulated by FAO and OIE. Countries are asked to submit one consolidated, agreed response that addresses all sectors. The national response should be submitted using the online questionnaire.
Responses are requested by 15 January 2017 for inclusion in the report on global progress on AMR to the World Health Assembly in May 2017 and for reports to the governing bodies of FAO and OIE.
For any questions on the process and the questionnaire, please contact Pravarsha Prakash at WHO AMR Secretariat in the first instance [email@example.com] and she will coordinate with FAO and OIE as required. This is the first round of annual monitoring. The questionnaire will be reviewed and revised after May 2017. Please send any comments on the questionnaire or the process to the same email address.
