APOC Management deeply saddened, is informing you of the sudden death of Dr Kwablah Awadzi in the afternoon of 16 March 2011 in Accra. Dr Awadzi was the Director of the Onchocercias Chemotherapy Research Center, in Hohoe, Ghana. He has for more than 20 years worked relentlessly with the former OCP and APOC on research on macrofilaricide and DEC patch test.

The passing away of Dr Awadzi is a rude shock and devastating to his family and the entire oncho control partners. For more than 2 decades the oncho control programmes have had the privilage of benefiting from the wisdom, work and guidance of one the finest scientists.

Africa could boast of: I am deeply saddened about this message and know that it will not be the same for the drug development and research programme of APOC for a long while.

Dr. Awadzi was a great scientist and leader in his field. His sudden passing is a terrible loss for the entire oncho community.

It is entirely appropriate that we now recognize, indeed celebrate, his remarkable achievements over decades and his important legacy in the long-term effort to eliminate onchocerciasis as a public health problem throughout Africa.

On behalf of APOC Programme, we extend our heart-felt condolences to the bereaved family.
