Document of the month: April 2009

"Health, labour and productivity", World Health Day, 7 April 1969.
Tests on load lifting, England.

In spite of its shiny name ergonomics is not a modern invention. Its basic principles were first applied by the prehistoric genius who thought of the wheel. For hundreds of years it has been considered good management to oblige man to adapt to the difficulties of the job. Today the ergonomist seeks to adapt the job to human capacities, anatomical, physiological and psychological. Back ailments are one of the most common causes of absenteeism and illness among several categories of workers and an ergonomist would point out that this is often caused by lifting loads the wrong way.
