Documents of the month (2011)

Document of the month: January 2011

In Tokyo, giant among giant cities: country pursuits.

Japan is in the midst of a ski boom and the mountain slopes are black with skiers. Reservations at inns and on trains are sold out days in advance. An enterprising company decided to build its own indoor ski slope near Tokyo. The slope is 300 metres long and about 30 metres wide. For five hours a day, employees spray the slope with snow made from finely chopped ice blown through air hoses.
