Prevention of Blindness and Visual Impairment

Universal eye health: a global action plan 2014–2019

Consultation on the development of a new draft action plan for the prevention of avoidable blindness and visual impairment for the period 2014-2019

The Executive Board at its recent EB130 session noted the Secretariat's report on the implementation of the action plan for the prevention of avoidable blindness and visual impairment.

The Executive Board decided in Decision EB130(1) that a follow-up action plan for the prevention of avoidable blindness and visual impairment for the period 2014-2019 should be developed. The Board requested the Director-General to develop a draft action plan for the prevention of avoidable blindness and visual impairment for the period 2014-2019 in close consultation with Member States and international partners, and to submit this draft action plan for consideration, through the Executive Board at its 132nd session, to the Sixty-sixth World Health Assembly in 2013.

Please find below a short series of questions that Member States and international partners are invited to respond to.

1. How has the current action plan helped you take forward work on the prevention of avoidable blindness and visual impairment?

2. Over the lifetime of the action plan, what have been the main challenges for you in taking forward work on the prevention of avoidable blindness and visual impairment?

3. The current action plan is structured around five objectives. Should the updated plan have the same objectives or should they be different? If different, what should they be?

4. What are the priority areas of work that you would like to see in the updated action plan?

Member States and international partners are invited to submit their views by sending an email to whopbd@who.int by Friday 16 March 2012

Responses to the questions above will help the Secretariat to work with Member States and international partners on an initial draft of the action plan 2014-2019. The draft will be made available for consultation on the WHO web site. The Secretariat plans to host a meeting in Geneva later in the year to review the first draft before preparing a final draft text for submission to the Executive Board at its 132nd session.
