The hands of the midwife may mean life or death
This photograph, taken in El Salvador in 1952, shows traditional village midwives learning new ways from the trained nurses of the Demonstration Centre. One of the most vital lessons the midwives were taught is that clean hands could make the difference between health, sickness, or even survival, to the mothers and babies they delivered.
