This baby's legs were crippled before he had learned to walk
This photograph, taken in Denmark in 1954, shows a young victim of poliomyelitis. WHO was acting as a centre for the exchange of information between researchers who were studying the virus which causes polio. They were working to develop a vaccine to conquer this merciless disease.
