Volunteers and health-care workers pivotal to early case detection of Buruli ulcer (Mycobacterium ulcerans infection), March 2011
The World Health Organization (WHO) says support from village volunteers and primary or front-line health-care workers is crucial to early case detection and control of Buruli ulcer (Mycobacterium ulcerans infection), a neglected tropical disease. Local support contributes to motivating community involvement in control activities and strengthening public health programmes. Timely detection of patients greatly improves their chances of a full recovery from the disease.
2009 Events
High Level Leadership meeting, 30 March – 03 April 09, Cotonou, Benin
Government of Benin, in collaboration with WHO co-organized a high-level leadership meeting on Buruli ulcer control and research in Cotonou from 30 March to 3 April 2009. Heads of State of Benin and Togo, the Vice President of Gabon, ministers of health, high-level delegations from endemic countries, non governmental organizations attended the meeting.
The annual meeting of the Global Buruli Ulcer Initiative (GBUI) was also held with the participation of over 300 representatives from 32 countries, grouping together policy-makers, national programme managers, scientists, representatives of NGOs, international organizations and partners.

Report of the 2008 Annual and TAG meetings
Every March, WHO organizes a meeting in Geneva that brings together representatives from the ministries of health of the affected countries, nongovernmental organizations and researchers currently involved in Buruli ulcer activities. This meeting is a very important part of global advocacy efforts and provides a forum to share and disseminate new information, and coordinate efforts among all partners.

2007 Events
Annual meeting of the Global Buruli Ulcer Initiative, 2-4 April 2007, Geneva, Switzerland
From 2-4 April, over 150 people attended this meeting. Participants came from 26 countries (Australia, Belgium, Benin, Brazil, Cameroon, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, France, French Guiana, Gabon, Germany, Ghana, Guinea, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Spain, Sudan, Switzerland, Togo, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States of America).
The progress on the development of treatment with antibiotics for Buruli ulcer was on top of the agenda.
2006 Events
International training course on the management of Buruli ulcer, 15 May to 9 June, Agogo Presbyterian Hospital, Agogo, Ghana
The World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Ghana organized a four-week training course on the management of Buruli ulcer for 21 doctors from 11 countries at the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital, Agogo in the Ashanti Akim North district. The participants were from Benin, Cameroon, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Guinea, Sudan, Uganda, Papua New Guinea and Togo. The course was facilitated by plastic surgeons from Australia, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Switzerland and France.
The Minister of Health, Major Courage E. K. Quashigah (Rtd), opened the course under the chairmanship of Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong, Paramount Chief of Agogo Traditional Council.
The main objective of the course was to train doctors working in endemic areas to improve their capacities to manage of Buruli ulcer and its complications. Those trained will support their national programmes to train health workers in their respective countries in a standardized manner. It was the first course of its kind to address one of the key points in the World Health Assembly resolution on Buruli ulcer in 2004. It was supported by the Nippon Foundation, Tokyo, Japan. About 105 patients were treated during the period.
Dr J. Saweka, WHO Representative in Ghana, closed the course on 9 June and presented certificates to the participants and trainers.

In 2006, WHO Annual meeting on Buruli ulcer took place in Geneva, from 15 to 17 March. About 150 people attended from 27 countries (Australia, Belgium, Benin, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, France, French Guiana, Gabon, Germany, Ghana, Guinea, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Nigeria, Spain, Sudan, Switzerland, Togo, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States of America).
