Buruli ulcer

Role of specific antibiotics in Mycobacterium ulcerans (Buruli ulcer) management

Provisional guidelines

Provision of antibiotics

In the initial phase of implementation of this guidance, WHO will provide the necessary antibiotics to interested endemic countries, in response to requests from national control programmes made via the WHO country offices. Governments of affected countries, nongovernmental organizations and other donors are encouraged to provide these antibiotics as well.

The request from national control programmes should contain the following information:

  • estimated number of patients (adults and children) to be treated in the endemic area in a given period;
  • name of the district and the hospital where drugs will be kept and administered;
  • a signed commitment from the national programme, district(s) and hospital(s) to implement and monitor consistent use of this guidance.
