Working with partners
One of the initiatives that is supporting the efforts to implement key tobacco control measures is the Bloomberg Initiative to reduce tobacco use, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Bloomberg Philanthropies is committed to the scaling up of tobacco control efforts in low- and middle-income countries where the health burden from tobacco use is highest. Working with other partners in the initiative, WHO is playing an important leadership and coordination role in assisting countries with the implementation of effective tobacco control interventions in line with best evidence and policies.
WHO is also working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Africa to prevent the tobacco epidemic from becoming as prevalent there as it is in other parts of the world. Their focus is on strengthening countries' ability to implement the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) and the establishment of a regional centre of excellence to support the development of countries' capacity to resist the spread of tobacco use.
