THE STEPS INSTRUMENT

The tool used to collect data and measure chronic disease risk factors is called the STEPS Instrument. The STEPS Instrument covers three different levels or 'steps' of risk factor assessment: Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3.

The generic STEPS Instrument template, which countries use to develop their own Instrument, contains:

  • CORE items (unshaded boxes)
  • EXPANDED items (shaded boxes)
  • Response options for Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3
  • Coding column, used to facilitate data management.

Note: The new version of the STEPS Instrument (version 2.1) is not currently available in Chinese.
