STEPS Manual

Using the STEPS Manual

The STEPS Manual provides a complete overview and guidance to sites wishing to implement the WHO STEPwise approach to chronic disease risk factor surveillance. It includes both general information and specific instructional material that can be used for:

  • Planning and setting up STEPS
  • Training
  • Data collection
  • Data entry
  • Data analysis and reporting

The STEPS Manual is written in modular parts and follows the sequence of events required to implement a STEPS survey. It is divided into seven parts. Each part of the manual is divided into sections. Each part and section is introduced with a table of contents to help readers find specific topics.

The STEPS Manual provides guidelines and supporting material for sites wishing to undertake chronic disease risk factor surveillance, using the WHO STEPwise approach to surveillance. Sections of the manual will guide you through the process of: Planning and preparing the survey scope and environment; training staff for data collection, data entry, and data analysis; conducting a STEPS survey; capturing and analysing the data that is collected; and finally reporting and disseminating the survey results.
