Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI)

Introduction

The Southern Africa EPI Epidemiological block comprises of 14 countries. There are 10 mainland countries and 4 Indian Ocean islands:

Mainland countries

Indian Ocean islands

  • Comoros
  • Madagascar

Goal

To assist all countries in the block to reduce morbidity and mortality from vaccine preventable diseases.

Objectives

  • To increase and sustain high (>80%) routine EPI coverage in countries
  • To conduct high quality supplemental immunization activities for diseases targeted for elimination or eradication
  • To intensify surveillance for EPI diseases particularly those targeted for eradication and elimination (polio, measles and tetanus)
  • To implement new technologies for improving safety of vaccines, and introduction of new vaccines
