Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI)
Introduction
The Southern Africa EPI Epidemiological block comprises of 14 countries. There are 10 mainland countries and 4 Indian Ocean islands:

Goal
To assist all countries in the block to reduce morbidity and mortality from vaccine preventable diseases.
Objectives
- To increase and sustain high (>80%) routine EPI coverage in countries
- To conduct high quality supplemental immunization activities for diseases targeted for elimination or eradication
- To intensify surveillance for EPI diseases particularly those targeted for eradication and elimination (polio, measles and tetanus)
- To implement new technologies for improving safety of vaccines, and introduction of new vaccines
