:: Objectives of the Global Agenda
- Provide impartial and prioritized guidance to all parties on research and development and national/global action for influenza control
- Support coordination of action for influenza control and surveillance
- Support implementation of identified priorities
- Support advocacy and fund raising
The Global Agenda has been developed for all those involved in activities to:
- Reduce morbidity and mortality from annual influenza epidemics
- Prepare for the next influenza pandemic
- Coordinate national and international action in influenza surveillance and control
- Advocate and raise funds
:: Major themes in the Global Agenda
- Improvement in the quality and coverage of virological and epidemiological influenza surveillance
- Improvement in the understanding of health and economic burden of influenza, including benefits from epidemic control and pandemic preparedness
- Expansion in the use of existing vaccines, particularly in developing countries and in high-risk groups and acceleration in the introduction of new vaccines
- Increase in national and global epidemic and pandemic preparedness, including vaccine and pharmaceutical supplies

Steps in the development of the Global Agenda
The Global Agenda on Influenza Surveillance and Control was developed and agreed by consensus by the participants of the WHO Consultation on Global Priorities in Influenza Surveillance and Control, held at the World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland, 6-7 May 2002.
Although the WHO Global Influenza Programme initiated the work on a Global Agenda on Influenza Surveillance and Control, it is the result of the work of many colleagues outside and within WHO. Their advice on the development process and the many contributions to the Draft Global Agenda and the Electronic Discussion have been greatly appreciated. The invaluable contribution of the participants in the final WHO Consultation on Global Priorities in Influenza Surveillance and Control, 6-7 May 2002 at which the Content of the Global Agenda was adopted is also gratefully acknowledged. The Global Agenda was developed in a spirit of collaboration aiming at developing ownership in and support for the implementation of the identified priority activities.
