2000 - Cholera in South Africa - Update

Disease Outbreak Reported

The Kwazulu-Natal Department of Health has reported 3 075 cases and 26 deaths since the start of the outbreak in mid-August 2000 (see previous report).

The outbreak is in Kwazulu-Natal, affecting the following areas: Lower Umfolozi Districts which include Ngwelezane and Empangeni, Eshowe/Nkandla areas, Stanger area and Port Shepstone area.

The Department of Health is working together with the WHO Office in South Africa and the WHO Regional Office in Harare to implement preventive and control measures.  Health education activities have been intensified.
