Establishing networks for information sharing

Information and communication technologies have revolutionized networking and information sharing. The objectives of this project are to help create and to help maintain networks of laboratory and epidemiology professionals in:

  • transferring knowledge and skills in using computers to support collaborative work
  • building strategies for communications and information sharing
  • developing technical tools that support permanent networks.

Highlights 2002

Internet portals to support knowledge networks of laboratory specialists:

In order to support the sustained improvement of national laboratory capabilities for detection and response to outbreaks, WHO is building regional knowledge networks of laboratory specialists. Two pilot projects began in 2002 with participants from the Integrated Capacity Development Programme for Laboratory Specialists : one in July with 18 participants coming from the Eastern Mediterranean region and one in December with 17 participants coming from the Euorpean region (Eastern Europe).

In order to support the activities of the knowledge network, communication and information sharing strategies are being developed to define a framework for the distance tutoring of a plan of action to improve the national capabilities for epidemic detection and response and for planning and facilitating community events at distance. The experience accumulated from these projects will allow the development of a more comprehensive technical infrastructure to support the establishment of regional networks.
