Dr Anne Marie Worning, Executive Director of the Director-General's Office.

Dr Anne Marie Worning, a Danish national, is the Executive Director of the Director-General's Office since April 2009. Previously, she was Director of Planning, Resource Coordination and Performance Monitoring in WHO headquarters.

Prior to moving to the headquarters, Dr Worning worked in both the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean Region and the Regional Office for Europe where she has held several senior positions related to administration, finance, management and strategic planning. She also has country experience from working in rural hospitals in Burundi.

Dr Worning was originally recruited to WHO's European office to work in the field of quality assurance and the information systems to support it. This included collaboration with the European Economic Community on medical informatics and with the OECD in reviewing its health database. She was also elected as counsellor to the Board of the International Society of Quality Assurance.

Prior to joining WHO, Dr Worning worked in the pharmaceutical industry as the European coordinator of clinical trials; she is a founding member of the Danish Society for Quality Assurance in Health Care. In addition, she has six years of clinical experience with a focus on surgery. Dr Worning received her medical degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1979.
