'Selection and Use of CD4+ T-cell Enumeration Technologies' Skills Building Workshop - 13 July 2004, held in Bangkok, Thailand.
A skills building workshop, organised by the Department of Essential Health Technologies, World Health Organization was held as part of the Skills Building Programme of the XV International AIDS conference in Bangkok, Thailand, on 13 July, 2004.
Participants in the workshop were given an opportunity to consider appropriate criteria for the selection and acquisition of CD4+ T-cell enumeration technologies. An overview of the basic principles of the different CD4+ T-cell enumeration methods was presented.
The specifications of dedicated and universal flow cytometers and interpretation of cytometeric results was covered by the workshop facilitators. Participants were advised of the range of flow cytometers currently available on the global market. In addition, laboratories in resource-limited settings were presented with information related to simpler, more cost effective CD4+ T-cell enumeration techniques utilising microscopy.
