Professor Reilly is Professor of Physical Activity and Public Health Science at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. He was previously Professor of Paediatric Energy Metabolism at the University of Glasgow.

His main area of research expertise is childhood and adolescent obesity globally, and he is active in many aspects of the topic, including aetiology, preventive interventions, treatment interventions, definitions/diagnosis and surveillance, and the health and educational consequences of obesity. He uses a wide range of techniques in research: systematic reviewing and evidence appraisal; epidemiological approaches including birth cohort studies and secondary analysis; physiological approaches, including stable isotope techniques for measurement of body composition and energy expenditure; methodological studies focusing on improving our ways of measuring physical activity and improving nutritional assessment.

Professor Reilly is an editor of the journal Pediatric Obesity. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and has a h-index of 42.
