WHO convenes meeting of experts to develop guidelines on wheelchairs

1 September 2006 - Experts convened in Geneva from 30 August to 1 September 2006 to finalize the first draft of the publication Guidelines on the provision of manual wheelchairs in less resourced settings. These guidelines will provide necessary information on the design, production and provision of wheelchairs for Member States and wheelchair programme implementers in developing countries. It will also assist donor agencies to have a better understanding about the need for and benefit of quality service provision and training in the field of wheelchair service provision. The draft content of the guidelines is:

  • Part 1: Overview
  • Part 2: Policy issues
  • Part 3: Services
  • Part 4: Design and production
  • Part 5: Training
  • Part 6: Role of stakeholders
  • Part 7: Evidence of good practices

The Guidelines are being developed in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) and three leading international NGOs, including the Centre for International Rehabilitation (USA), Motivation (UK) and Whirlwind Wheelchair International (USA). The launch is expected in mid 2007. A global wheelchair Consensus Conference involving all stakeholders will be held in Bangalore, India, from 6-11 November 2006 in collaboration with USAID and ISPO to support the development of the Guidelines.
