Decade declared for the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities (2006-2016) across the Americas
6 June 2006 - The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) declared the Decade of the Americas for the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities (2006-2016). The program of action for the decade was adopted by the Permanent Council at its meeting of 17 May 2006, requesting the Permanent Council to:
- establish a working group to prepare a Program of Action for the Decade of the Americas for the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities (2006-2016), taking into account the document entitled "Draft Program of Action for the Decade of the Americas for Persons with Disabilities (2006-2016)" presented by Peru
- to request the Working Group to hold a special meeting during the second half of 2006 to receive inputs on the Draft Program of Action from the member states of the Organization
- to request the General Secretariat to provide the broadest possible support for the Working Group's activities
Since the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 1983-1992 the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons, the effort has been carried out through the Asian Decade (1993-2002), the African Decade (1999-2009), the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons (2003-2012) and the Arab Decade (2003-2012).
