Report of consensus conference on wheelchairs for developing countries

A consensus conference on wheelchairs for developing countries was held in Bangalore, India from 6–11 November 2006. The conference was attended by over 70 participants from all over the world and provided a unique opportunity for professionals, wheelchair users, service providers, donors, manufacturers and academics to meet and discuss various issues related to wheelchairs and the service provision. This publication reports on the work of the conference and contains the background papers and their discussions, detailed reports of the syndicate discussions on selected topics, the resulting plenary discussions, and the final conclusions and recommendations. The consensus conference laid the foundation for the development of the Guidelines on the provision of manual wheelchairs in less-resourced settings, which has been developed by WHO in partnership with the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
