WHO STAFF MEETING

The daily staff briefing meeting began at 8:15 am. The meeting was informed that

IMMUNIZATION CAMPAIGN IN TUBMANBURG

A combined immunization team comprising WHO, UNICEF and MOH began vaccination campaign against measles in Tubmanburg and its surroundings in the Bomi County. Drs Teprey, Pauwon and Duoworko from WHO, Liberia participated in this activity.

A total of 502 children were vaccinated against measles and 353 had Vitamin A doses administered on the first day. The target group for the vaccination is from six months to 15 years and for the Vitamin A administration in children under five years of age. The duration of the exercise is one week and will end on 4th September 2003.

MASS CHLORINATION IN MONROVIA MUNICIPALITY

The mass chlorination campaign in Monrovia was expected to begin today, 29th August 2003. The chlorine for the exercise was provided by WHO and has been distributed to the supervisors. WHO also provided transport for MOH supervisors to the field. Prof. Cheikh Ndiaye, Dr. Enzanza and Ms Melanie Zipperer in a coordinating field visit noted that the campaign has really not commenced as had been expected.

The process started very late due to coordination problems and the chlorination of wells did not yet take place. The supervisors and the technicians went to the field to carry out preparatory activities, such as chlorine distribution and identification of wells. The chlorination will now begin tomorrow, Saturday 30th August. 

DISTRIBUTION OF KITS

The following Kits were distributed today:

TRIP TO BUCHANNAN

Dr. Bolay joined the UN Joint Assessment Team to Buchanan. In addition he delivered the two basic health kits for the LAC hospital.

SANITATION MEETING AT MONROVIA CITY CORPORATION (MCC)

This meeting was held in the MCC conference room at 2.00 pm. It was organized by MCC. The objective was focused on collaboration and coordination for garbage collection and disposal. Dr. Enzanza represented WHO. The MCC was concerned with the poor sanitation in the municipality and wanted pledges for resource mobilization to finance its project. WHO and UNICEF recommended that the proposal be examined in the total framework of the WATSAN Committee and be integrated in its subsequent action plans which was agreeable to all participants.

 

MEDIA RELATIONS

The Media Officer met with AFP journalist and explained him how the water chlorination campaign will be carried out. The journalist was also briefed on WHO's other activities and priorities.

 Other media and wires were contacted and invited to join the chlorination and vaccination campaigns.

 

NEW ARRIVALS

Dr. Komla Etienne Siamevi, the EHA Regional Coordinator in AFRO and Dr. Frederick "Skip" Burckle Jnr. WHO Senior Advisor on Rapid Health Assessment arrived today, 29th August 2003.

 

HUMANITARIAN CORRDINATING MEETING

The usual morning and evening meetings were routine with the usual sectoral presentations and discussion of security issues.

DDR MEETING

The first brainstorming meeting on DDR was held today convened by UNDP and attended by UN Agencies, the UN Rapid Assessment Team, some NGOs and some donors notably the World Bank and USAID. There was intensive introduction of the issues related to DDR and participants got the chance to express their opinions on the current DDR process while at the same time reflecting on the experiences of previous DDR and those in the Region and beyond.

A full report will be submitted and the next meeting is planned for Wednesday.
