JPOs are sponsored by their respective governments: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

In WHO, JPOs serve at country offices, regional offices and at headquarters. Under the supervision of a senior staff member, JPOs work with international and national staff and are involved in the identification, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of WHO programmes.
