At the Global Forum for Health Research held in Mexico in November 2004, WHO committed to create language specific networks to bridge the digital divide between the developed and developing countries. Portuguese was selected because it is the most spoken language in the southern hemisphere and there is at least one Portuguese-speaking country in four WHO Regional Offices.
