The work on impact assessment of the WHO FCTC has begun

This groundbreaking public health exercise is led by seven independent experts under the guidance of the Bureau of the Conference of the Parties.

The first meeting of the expert group on impact assessment of the WHO FCTC, established by the Conference of the Parties, took place in Geneva, at the WHO Headquarters, on 10-11 August 2015.

At their first meeting, the experts reviewed the relevant literature and experience available internationally, including data and information that can support the impact assessment work.

The work, to be conducted in the period leading up to the 7th session of the Conference of the Parties, will include desk reviews, country missions, and analysis of country data. As a result analytical reports, methodological tools and recommendations will be developed aiming to strengthen the impact of WHO FCTC in the future.

The group also elaborated upon the methods it wishes to use during its work, including the methodology to be applied in the course of impact assessment missions in twelve selected Parties, that will be conducted in line with decision FCTC/COP6(13) of the Conference of the Parties. The Secretariat will support the work of the group during this exercise.

The analysis will cover the effectiveness of measures required under the Convention, and consideration will also be given to matters related to gender, children and vulnerable socioeconomic groups.
