International Association of National Public Health Institutes meeting profiles the WHO FCTC

The WHO FCTC was profiled at the eighth Annual Meeting of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI) that took place in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, on 29 September to 2 October 2013. The meeting was hosted by the Tanzanian National Institute for Medical Research with the theme “public health in the post 2015 era: the changing of the role of national public health institutes”. Tobacco control and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) were one of the highlighted topics of the conference. Dr Haik Nikogosian, Head of the Convention Secretariat, addressed the meeting with a review of the WHO FCTC as a new type of international public health instrument, with a particular focus on its role in strengthening international and multisectoral action and the prevention and control of NCDs. He also provided an overview of the recently adopted Protocol to Eliminate Illicit trade in Tobacco Products, with an emphasis on its importance for galvanizing multisectoral action and strengthening the legal instrumentarium in tobacco control and in public health in general.
