The stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS affects communities worldwide. It is fuelled by fear and lack of knowledge. Discrimination is widespread. Few people know - or want to know - their HIV status because they fear the consequences. Driven underground, the spread of the disease is harder to control and reverse.

The availability of treatment makes it much more likely that people, like Paul, will come forward for HIV testing, learn their status, receive counselling and care, and become knowledgeable about preventing the spread of HIV.
