Face to face with chronic disease: Cancer

Miriame's story

WHO/Marko Kokic

Hospice Africa-Uganda, an NGO based in Uganda, sends a Palliative Care Clinical Officer to visit Miriame every two weeks. The NGO offers her much needed counselling and pain relief, as Miriame comes to terms with the fact that she is dying.

Cervical cancer kills more than 250 000 women worldwide every year, and 90% of new cases are in low and middle income countries. The tragedy is that almost all these cases could be prevented through effective screening and treatment of pre-cancerous lesions. Those diagnosed with cancer can be successfully treated if detected at an early stage.
