Luciano was immediately enrolled in a special programme for deaf children. Every week, he attends classes to help him learn to speak and lip read.

Luciano’s hearing loss could have been prevented. His mother had not been immunized against rubella. Immunization of a woman of childbearing age when she is not pregnant greatly reduces the risk of her baby developing hearing loss from this infection during pregnancy.
