A view of Ibanda, Uganda
WHO/Christopher Black

Ibanda - a small mining community 300 km from the Ugandan capital Kampala - was the centre of a recent outbreak of Marburg haemorrhagic fever. The outbreak began in late June 2007 near the Kitaka mine in Kamwenge, 30 km from Ibanda. The first case was a 21-year-old miner who was taken to a small clinic nearby with fever and bleeding.
