Two bat species have been found in the mine so far: Rousettus aegyptiacus (fruit bat) and Hipposideros species (insect eater). The small mine had been in operation - sometimes illegally - from the 1930s to the 1980s when it was abandoned. Since it legally reopened last January, between 50 and 90 miners dig looking for galena - the lead ore - and gold.
