Successful fight against tuberculosis in south-western Russia

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, conditions were ripe for a tuberculosis (TB) epidemic across the Russian Federation. A decade later, in places such as Orel, in the south-western part of the country, the burden of TB was alarming. Amid falling living standards and a crumbling health system, the supply chain for TB medicines broke down, greatly affecting treatment success.
