But the number of preventable maternal deaths at the health centre is still too high, as is elsewhere in the country. Senegal's maternal mortality rate has fallen from 510 deaths per 100 000 live births in 1992 to 401 in 2005. But on average five women die a day due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
