Michael Berrian, a 42-year-old homeless man from Newark, New Jersey, is about to be discharged from University Hospital of the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. After two weeks in an isolation room designed for people newly diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) he is no longer contagious and can continue treatment outside the hospital. Berrian felt unwell for months before the diagnosis. TB was identified at the hospital after severe chest pain prompted him to seek emergency medical care.
