A day after discharge, Berrian gets acquainted with health worker Rebecca Stevens, who will follow his post-hospital recovery. They meet at a clinic that specializes in TB patient care. The five-year-old clinic treats about 140 people with TB each year. There were 508 new cases of TB in New Jersey in 2006, with 13 779 new cases reported in the United States as a whole. Worldwide, in 2005, there were 8.8 million new TB cases and 1.6 million deaths.
