2008 in review: key public health issues

A WHO health specialist teaches local people how to treat water to make it safe for drinking after the cyclone in Myanmar.

Humanitarian crises

WHO and its partners provide emergency health relief to populations affected by conflicts and natural disasters. A massive earthquake in China, cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, tropical storms in Haiti, floods across West Africa and Yemen, and fighting in Ethiopia, Sudan and the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo put millions of people at risk. WHO coordinates the international health response to these humanitarian crises.
