On May 2nd 2008, Cyclone Nargis struck the Ayeyarwady Delta region with hurricane force winds. Accompanying tidal surges penetrated deep inland. During the night, driven by the howling winds, a wall of water swept over the Delta, leaving in its wake, a devastating loss of life and destruction of the fragile villages.
