Blindness avoided for millions of children

The eyes of a newborn are examined by hospital staff, Romania.

Ophthalmologists in Romania screen a baby for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a disease that affects the eye vessels of prematurely born babies and can progress to cause permanent blindness. Routine screenings in infants who weigh less than 1500 grams, or who are born before 32 weeks, can detect the condition in time to start sight-saving treatment.

Romania: 4769 babies screened for ROP; 442 babies treated
