The government of Gujarat launched the Chiranjeevi Yojana scheme in five districts in 2005 to reduce the number of maternal and neonatal deaths. The scheme uses the help of private obstetricians in small rural towns and villages to provide skilled care at delivery and emergency obstetric care to poor women.
