The aftermath
The 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the capital, Port-au-Prince and many surrounding areas. The quake decimated government and humanitarian aid structures in the country, including many UN activities, and killed 200 000 people. Providing emergency surgery, particularly for orthopaedic injuries, was the priority health need following the disaster.
