Haiti earthquake compounds health needs

Rescuers at the Montana Hotel search for survivors.

Friends, neighbours and family members are the first rescuers. They use crowbars, shovels and their hands to clear rubble in a bid to reach survivors at the Montana Hotel, which collapsed in the earthquake. The presence of dead bodies poses no public health risk, but there is a clear mental and psychosocial imperative to managing dead bodies quickly.
