Japan: earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant damage
In March, an earthquake struck Japan and resulted in a tsunami that damaged nuclear power plants in Fukushima, Japan. Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated due to the crisis. WHO worked together with other UN agencies to support the Japanese government's safety efforts. WHO also provided timely advice to the general public on the health impacts of radiation with, for example, warnings against self-medicating against radiation by taking iodized salt.
