Philippines: Bringing the health response into focus

With tens of thousands of children displaced by the storm now living in congested settlements where disease can spread fast, plans for a polio and measles vaccinations campaign were quickly put into place by Philippine health officials, UNICEF and WHO. Given that the typhoon had knocked out power lines and electricity, donations of solar-powered refrigerators by the UK and US governments filled a critical gap, since vaccines have to be kept cold to be effective.
