WHO emergency response in the Philippines

A mother with her newborn baby in the Daanbantayan District Hospital in Northern Cebu, Philippines
WHO/I. Hamam

This young mother was encouraged by the doctor to breastfeed after she gave birth at the Daanbantayan District Hospital in Northern Cebu. During disasters, it is particularly important that mothers initiate and maintain breastfeeding. While breastfeeding is the best alternative for mothers in feeding their babies in any case, in disasters like Haiyan, the lack of clean water means other options like baby formula are actually dangerous for the child. New mothers are educated and supported to establish and maintain breastfeeding of their babies.
